Review of Monsieur Lazhar (2011) by Paul D — 26 Nov 2013
If you don't like this one, go to your heart transplant surgeon and get that blackened husk of a caraway seed removed and a real one put in. Kids are about Year 6 and they're stunned by the suicide of their teacher, but the people struggling the most are the parents and other teachers who are worried about how the kids will handle it, and into the middle comes M Lazhar, who's got his own grief to contend with as he's left Algeria to prepare the way for his wife and kids.
His wife seems to have done a Salman Rushdie and they've got to scoot. The lead kids are terrific as is Fellag who plays the teacher. The girl who plays Alice will be breaking some major-league hearts in the next 10 plus years.
..it's a captivating performance. I think I might watch some more Quebeçois movies. I found it much easier to understand than French movies made in France.
