Review of Monkey Shines (1988) by Mitchell P — 01 Jun 2012
I remember as a child looking at all the horror film cases in my local video store and always seeing this, the UK video sleeve featured an orangutan dressed as a butler which always creeped me out. Some 15 or so years later I find the film, this film. First off, misleading cover or what! Secondly had no idea this was a Romero film!
It's not bad though, the bond between Allan and Ella is believable but the entire living brain tissue being used on the monkey thus creating a psychic link between Allan and Ella where Ella acts out all of the anger and rage Allan feels towards people who are now treating him differently is utter balls. Having said that I still like the film quite a bit, it's a cool concept and it's certainly unique, just a bit silly. The dream sequence at the end where Ella jumps out of Allan's back during surgery was pretty cool.
