Review of Monkey Shines (1988) by Mitch B — 21 Apr 2012
Solid Frankenstein tale, but with a helper monkey. As ridiculous as a story about a helper monkey gone bad sounds, this is smart and suspenseful horror film from fright master, or at least he used to be, George A.
Romero. In many ways, I've always felt this was Romeo's most polished film, although I would count some of his earlier films as his best film. I'd also say this film stands out among Romeo films, along with "Knightriders", as spending more time on the emotions and relationship the characters, creating a surprisingly believable relationship between quadriplegic Jason Beghe and his helper monkey Ella.
Watching the film now, it's also fun to see some well known faces in supporting roles, including Stanley Tucci, Janine Turner, John Pankow, Stephen Root, Patricia Tallman and Tom Savini doing stunts.
The film also features a great score by the always great David Shire. A solid piece of horror all around.
