Review of Mongol: The Rise of Genghis Khan (2007) by Danny M — 15 May 2009
You have to wait a long time for anything particularly awesome to happen (slightly problematic, given that this film is about one of the baddest dudes who ever lived) but once it does, it's well worth the wait. In the meantime, we get all these beautiful landscape shots of the steppe and this wonderful, Yo-Yo Ma-esque soundtrack. Although the love story is a major aspect of the film, it doesn't totally overpower the plot like in most Dracula adaptations.
Of particular note in this film is Honglei Sun as Jamukha, who with his single stripe of hair and moustache, looks like an Asian Mister T, and is absolutely delightful to watch.
The Modernists will have trouble with the sympathetic look this movie takes at Temudgin, but fuck them.
