Review of Mommie Dearest (1981) by Gabe C — 01 Mar 2014
I thought it was pretty good. Overacting can be good and bad but I'm this case I thought it was great. The kids acting was poor but how does an 8 year old compete with Dunaway? I guess the production looked cheap but for a movie made in '81 set in the 50's and 60's it seemed appropriate.
I guess if you believe the accounts of others, not Christina's, the movie is in bad taste. If you believe Christina in most of which she writes, which I do, it's a thrilling movie. The behaviors of alcoholic and bi-polar parents can be just as real as they are portrayed in the movie.
It's very possible people who were not exposed to such behavior see the movie as far-fetched and unrealistic. Knowing first hand the life Christina said she went through, it's a powerful movie.
