Review of Mommie Dearest (1981) by Luc L — 30 Sep 2012
Impecfect and flawed yet... well made and highly watchable movie. Faye Dunaway's performance is amazing to watch. This is one of the reasons why, this become an cult film today. But the movie was never meant to be campy at times, yes, the movie is intentionally darkly funny at times but Dunaway is certainly over the top at times, maybe, a bit too much in certain tense moments.
There is many choice scenes in this picture what makes it memorable. Hobel as young Christine and Scarwid as older Christine are expectionally good in their roles. Alda does fine work as Joan's always loyal assistant.
There is a few unintentional laughs, mainly because of dialogue. Not because of the acting of Dunaway. "Mommie Dearest" is one of the most misunderstood pictures to come out of the early 1980's.
It is not a masterpiece by any means, but sometimes "Mommie Dearest" is certainly brillant at times.
