Review of Mommie Dearest (1981) by Paul D — 26 Jan 2015
It is probably a shitty movie, but Faye Dunaway's performance is historical and one of the crazies shows you will ever see. I strongly disagree with the Razzie she got for this. Sure it is camp and over the top but its Joan crawford, seriously, how is she supposed to be moderate? Its ''bitch from hell in tinsel'' time.
Crawford was a full time actress; natural was not among her options. So Dunaways' performance is manic, tender, psychotic, generous and scary. Its not meant to be realistic; its meant to be epic, and it is! She dont deserve laughter she deserves praise.
The script is meandering and the chronology makes no sense, but Dunaway holds it together like only a true actress like her can do. Dont miss it!
