Review of Molly's Game (2017) by Rebecca31 — 04 Jan 2018
Yet another true story movie just in time for Oscar Season. Meet Molly Bloom (Jessica Chastain) an Olympic-class skier who also ran the world's most exclusive high stakes poker game. Her players range from Hollywood movie stars to the Russian mob. How accurate is it? Don't ask me I didn't read the book but I can tell you it's highly entertaining and overall a well told story with a brilliant central performance from Chastain. Quite often I find myself rolling my eyes when a film opens with narration, the majority of the time it's completely unnecessary and quickly becomes irritating but not this time.
Jessica Chastain completely owns this part, she was perfect for Molly Bloom, between her and Idris Elba there is enough scenery chewing to make even Samuel L. Jackson jealous. The story wastes no time getting started, it's sharp, fast paced and will hold your focus for the most part. What a way for Aaron Sorkin to make his directorial debut. I went into Molly's Game having seen the trailer countless times but knowing nothing about the story. Although the overly long trailer ruins some of the more dramatic scenes in the film you should definitely check this one out. With such a memorable performance from Chastain surrounded by a strong supporting cast you can't help but get reeled into this unique story. Highly recommended.
