Review of Molly's Game (2017) by Andrew A — 14 Dec 2018
This movie deserves SO MUCH MORE praise on all fronts that it is a travesty.
The directorial debut of Aaron Sorkin, the genius writer behind 'The Social Network', 'Moneyball' and 'Steve Jobs' gives us this fast paced, cut throat insight into a young woman's rise and self destruction in the world of gambling.
From the moment this movie started, it had my attention. The script and top notch delivery by Jessica Chastain make this a fast paced and fun AF watch.
Breaking away from her usual self, Chastain gives a nomination worthy performance as Molly Bloom, who finds herself in Los Angeles. Young, sharp tongued and eager to make money, the movie showcases her ability to maneuver her way through unknown territory as she knows nothing about poker. Her wit whilst among powerful and undeniably shady characters is a journey that was fun to watch but sad to see, as it eventually leads to her downfall.
The supporting cast is absolute fire as well, with Idris Elba playing a lawyer whom Molly seeks representation from. The banter between the two of them is electric yet wholesome, as Elba both understands the dilemma she is in but does not want the tabloid turmoil that follows her name.
At the centre of it all though, this movie showcases topics of greed, addiction and self destruction all can happen without you even realizing it.
Heartbreaking but enthralling, I loved this movie from start to finish and wish it had gotten more acclaim this year.
