Review of Modern Times (1936) by Matthew G — 10 Sep 2008
A film that speaks volumes without even using dialogue, Chaplin's Modern Times truly packs a punch into only 87 thought-provoking, satirical, and often humorous minutes. It is impossible to not admire how one film can expose societal ills and relevant issues through ingenious gags and over-exuberant facial expressions.
It leaves you feeling oddly content and blissful, despite its primarily depressing messages; a feat that is not easy to accomplish. Whether you live in modern times, postmodern times, or futuristic times where asexual reproduction is fashionable and the platypus is the most advanced creature on Earth, Modern Times is a film for the ages.
