Review of Modern Times (1936) by Casey W — 22 Oct 2009
Again, this is just amazing. It is extremely funny, but has a lot more depth than I expected. I loved the opening shot of sheep being herded. They never came back, but it's hard to miss the point Chaplin is trying to make.
The video intercom stuff was frightening too, because now that technology is pretty common, while back then, it didn't exist yet, that I know of. The end scene was typical, two lovers walking into the horizon, but it wasn't entirely cheery.
There was this feeling of, "okay, what now?" that I found at the end of The Graduate as well. I can't blame Chaplin for ripping off the popular Dustin Hoffman film.
