Review of Modern Times (1936) by Thomas M — 10 Jan 2010
Classic Chaplin as he brilliantly mixes slapstick humor with social commentary. Here The Little Tramp plays a factory worker in the depression who is worked till he suffers a mental breakdown. After which he becomes homeless, thrown in jail, falls in love and aids a fugitive and then must escape from the law himself.
Again Chaplin proves he is one of the very best filmmakers of all time by combining such desperate genres and making them work in ways that have rarely ever been matched. Highlights include the first ten minutes where we see factory workers work in ways that were ment to be exagerrated but I can tell you as a fact almost feels real.
Also Chaplin performing his nonsese song and dance number at the end. And the famous walking into the sunset final scene. Charlie Chaplin was a genius of the highest order.
