Review of Modern Times (1936) by Matt C — 05 Apr 2010
Classic. This is probably the best example of Chaplin's true genius. It's not only laugh-out-loud hilarious, but it's also an effective, intelligent, and poignant satire of the Great Depression and our culture's paranoia during hard times in general.
Not only is the film superb, but so is the direction and camerawork. The film looks beautiful, especially the end where he and the gamin stroll into the sunset. It's these kinds of classic movies that get inside me and move me that make me love cinema so much.
The only part I didn't like in the entire film was the gamin left her little sisters out to dry to go be orphaned. I was like, ahhh come on that's pretty friggin cold. But I suppose desperate times call for desperate measures, and Chaplin is spot on perfect in showing just that.
I truly love this movie.
