Review of Mobsters (1991) by Kevin M — 13 Apr 2010
Mobsters is a semi fictional tale of gangsters, Charlie "Lucky" Luciano, Meyer Lansky, Bugsy Siegal and Frank Costello as the rise to the top during Prohibition. This movie was very poorly recieved by critics, but I beg to differ.
It has it's faults, it isn't a masterpiece but it certainly isn't a flop. Christian Slater (Lucky) and Anthony Quinn (Gangster Masseria) were both nominated for Razzies. While Quinn was Razzie material, Slater wasn't.
He wasn't very much like the real Luciano. Slater portrayed him as sort of an anti-hero, a gangster who was good at heart, while the real Luciano was a bad to the bone gangster. But still, I think Slater's acting is terrific, along with the rest of the supporting cast, except Anthony Quinn who I didn't like.
The action was great, there was a lot of gunfights which I liked. The musical score was brilliant. The last half hour was extremely intense, well acted and full of suspense. The only faults I can find with this film is the historic inaccuracy, the plot is quite complicated at some times, like when the mobsters are talking about getting Masseria to trust them before than kill him so they have to save his life first and stuff like that.
I recommend it to gangster movie fans, but GANGSTER fans probably would like it for it's inaccuracy. It's no Godfather but it certainly isn't no Battlefield Earth.
