Review of Mobsters (1991) by Rhiannon P — 15 Feb 2012
This is basically Young Guns with a Mafia Story grafted on to it,and while thats no bad thing the History part of the film flies out the window in more ways than one.
Christian Slater doesnt have the gravitas to play Lucky Luciano so the whole film is nearly scuppered from the off ,i say nearly because Patrick Dempsey is a great Meyer Lansky and you get two scenery chewing performances from Anthony Quinn and Michael Gambon as rival mob bosses.
Of course the film is packed with violence and the action comes thick and fast but a lott of histiorical fact is jettisoned in favour of bloodletting ,which is a shame considering the source material is pretty decent stuff.
As I said its not as bad as some critics would have you believe but it still feels like a missed opputunity.
