Review of Mistress America (2015) by Tatsuhito K — 04 Sep 2015
It's hard to make a good screwball comedy these days, but Noah Baumbach, who I'm a huge fan of, pulled that off beautifully! Just like they did with Frances Ha, he and Gerwig co-wrote this film and the actress also starred in it.
Baumbach movies are not for everyone for various reasons, but mostly due to the fact a lot of the characters in his movies are incredibly pretentious, snobby, narcissistic, egotistical pseudo-intellectuals.
Personally, I think unlikable characters are quite fascinating to observe as long as they are portrayed right; and Mistress America does it really well. The script is insightful and often darkly comic, and Gerwig and Lola Kirke give really good performances as the main leads.
It's slightly better than "While We're Young", but not as charming or emotionally engaging as "Frances Ha", which I think is Baumbach's best film to this day. But this is not necessarily a bad thing, and I enjoyed Mistress America enormously; it had me laughing from start to finish, and I was very pleased with it.
Mistress America is a pretty damn good comedy film.
