Review of Mississippi Burning (1988) by Rhys G — 21 Nov 2007
The film combines the buddy/cop genre with that of the social problem movie, resulting in a film that while eager, has the weaknesses of both of its sources. The relationship between the two characters doesn't echo the theme, and instead distracts from it, resulting in a message that comes across as preachy and half-baked.
In the Heat of the Night was little better in terms of plot, but it had the great advantage of making Dafoe's analogue a black man.
