Review of Misery (1990) by Lawrence B — 01 Aug 2015
Kathy Bates' puts in a career-defining turn as demented nurse Annie Wilkes, who rescues writer James Caan from a blizzard-induced car crash, only to subject him to an ordeal of pain and torture when she finds out that he has killed off her favourite character, the eponymous Misery, in his latest book.
Rob Reiner's adaptation of Stephen King's novel (one of the author's more favoured screen versions of his work) is played more as black comedy than all-out horror but Reiner still offers plenty of skilful suspense and shocks, not least the wince-inducing 'hobbling' scene'.
Not to miss.
