Review of Mind Game (2004) by Late R — 11 Aug 2018
Absolutely bonkers and eschewing the norm in every way, 'Mind Game' is a visually stunning, colourful, mad delight of a film. It'd be easy to think that there's not a whole lot of story to go with all that style, but although it's very simple, the message at its heart is a profound truth that's all too easy to forget: your life is your own and will only ever be what you make of it, so don't ever give up, make something happen and live your life to the fullest ("Your life is the result of your own decisions").
It really manages to translate that feeling on a sentimental, nostalgic wavelength that requires few words. It's entertaining, fun and one hell of an imaginative trip that could only have been put together by the good ol' Japanese (that's right, there's no shortage of WTF moments).
Granted, it may not be for everyone and you might just have to be in the right mood to watch it, but at the very least, you can say you've seen one of the most unique animations out there. Personally, I can't help but think it's a bloody masterpiece.
