Review of Millions (1937) by Bobby L — 09 Jun 2010
Danny Boyle's lyrical homage to youth and faith is one of his best movies. I'm skeptical to say it is his best, because I can't think of a movie by him I don't thoroughly enjoy, to varying degrees though.
Boyle's chaotic style is here, in spades, and it, as odd as it might seem, suits the story perfectly. The way he injects the countdown to the transition from Pounds to Euros, is fun, and the intertitles that pop up are excellent.
The acting all the way around is superb, with young Alex Etel as Damian, the main boy, is quite a discovery. His innocence and utter belief that he's doing the right thing grounds the film. His fantastic/ supernatural/ hallucinatory talks with the saints is a great device to not just explore Boyle's take on religion, but how it influences people's lives.
