Review of Coco (2017) by Bobby L — 12 May 2018
Finally got to see this! Grad school really ruined my plans to take my kids to see it in the theatre. In typical Pixar fashion, this was a complete home run. Pixar somehow has a deep connection to my soul. Their movies can make me weep uncontrollably, and this was no exception. Multiple trips to the bathroom to "splash water on my face". Artistically beautiful while also extremely captivating, Coco delivers on style and substance. Most importantly, it accurately and beautifully depicts the Mexican culture which holds a very dear and special place in my heart. (To be clear, I fell in love with this culture while living in Mexico for two years as a missionary). So you combine a Pixar movie (they already possess some deep emotional connection to my soul) and add Mexican culture = you get waterworks from me.
We need more movies about Mexican culture like this. It bothers me that I grew up in a neighboring country and had basically no knowledge at all about this culture until I moved there. Movies like this can help change that.
Definitely gotta buy the all spanish version of the movie. Bien hecho Pixar. Bien Hecho. Mis respetos.
