Review of Miller's Crossing (1990) by Martin P — 01 Feb 2009
Definitely evokes a romantic sensibility to all the hard-boiled gangster flicks of Hollywood's Golden Age. The characters are not so much characters but exaggerated archetypes of such a film - the self-serving protagonist, the whore with a heart of gold, the crooked cops.
The Coen's ear for the speech patterns of those older films is well-trained, same as it was for 'The Hudsucker Proxy" - great lines like "I'm sick of the high hat, Leo" and "What's the rumpus?" are scattered about to great effect.
