Review of Miller's Crossing (1990) by Matt M — 16 Jun 2013
The story of the loyal lieutenant to a crime boss in his turf war against his major rival. To make matters more complicated, the lieutenant gets romantically involved with the boss' woman, whose brother's behaviours start all the troubles.
The Coens, always more than willing to tribute classic American cinema, revisit the gangster genre in a romanticised story that is also sprinkled with nostalgia despite its flirtations with violence and its dealings with themes such as masculinity.
Visually, it looks wonderful, and the story is perfectly balanced, while the performances add to the overall appeal of Miller's Crossing, which feels like an instant classic.
