Review of Miller's Crossing (1990) by Keith H — 03 Nov 2009
I hadn't seen this picture in about a decade, so I decided a couple of nights ago to give it another whirl. Though Miller's Crossing is indeed a stylish, well done gangster film, it by no means is my favorite of the Coen brothers' collection.
The dialogue is just immaculately written, and the cast is mind bogglingly solid: Gabriel Byrne, Albert Finney, John Turturro, Marcia Gay Harden, Steve Bescemi. I know I'm going to take flack for saying this, but I just think the movie tends to drag at times.
In fact, there are moments that are chillingly quiet...and well...boring. However, the good far outweighs the bad, and the Coen brothers' wit mixed with a little Irish mobster thrill is a combination that is hard to criticize too harshly.
Though I think much of their work is absolutely 100% perfect (Raising Arizona, The Big Lebowski, No Country For Old Men, etc.) this one just falls a tid bit shy of those films...great, but not perfect.
