Review of Midnight Special (2016) by Mandela W — 20 Jul 2016
Midnight special is a film that starts out with the main issue at hand. a group of fugitives on the run from the government. These 3 include a father named Roy played by Michael Shannon, a former police officer named lucas played by Joel Edgerton and a young boy named Alton who possesses strange unearthly powers. Roy is trying to not only keep alton away from government hands but is on a mission to deliver him to an unknown location. Along the way it is revealed the secrets of his abilities, why he has them and the mysterious background of all these characters.
I loved that they started the movie with the main conflict at hand. very good writing choice. its really well shot for a movie set mainly at night. Very good cinematography because of that.
Jaeden Leidenber is sooo good her and really makes it believable that he is a kid with supernatural issues. He plays the part of a boy who doesn't freak out at his powers but isn't sure as to what he is in the begining. he talks like a grown man in this film its uncanny. I don't think I've ever seen Michael Shannon play a role like this before. He is a truly loving father here but also a man desperate to keep his son and his secret safe after breaking him out of a cult. he seems like a bad guy at first or someone you wouldn't like but he actually is the guy you are truly routing for.
There is so much mystery behind every character from shannon's character all the way to Adam driver's character. jeff Nichols does a fine job of drawing you into the mysterious sci fi feeling of the whole film since it starts off with chase. The film had some really nice visual effects and the score was fantastic.
Midnight Special is a killer flick, I really liked it.
