Review of Midnight Run (1988) by Andrew W — 16 Nov 2007
There are many great buddy-comedy movies - where the disparate leads are uncomfortably thrown together, intially dislike each other, and then, through the sharing of a variety of death-defying situations, form a grudging respect or even affection for each other.
Midnight Run is BY FAR the best of these. The plot is fairly formulaic, but has much more heart and character depth than most buddy-actioners, and the exquisite dialogue is turned into brilliant banter by two leads at the top of their game.
Grodin's depth and nuance as an actor (please see Ishtar, NOT Beethoven) have always been underrated, and De Niro?...well, I'VE always preferred him in light comedy to his intense stuff, even if the rest of the world has only agreed recently as Bobby has become "Fockerised".
The supporting cast of Midnight Run is also flawless, as is the catchy, hummable Elfman theme music. And if ANYONE can relate to the love-hate childish bickering of two grown men as they journey cross-country - it's me.
"YOU lied to ME first!".
