Metallica: Through the Never (2013) Review by Spencer Dunnings.

I've been waiting for Through the Never since Lars Ulrich announced it a year or two back. And then we get all of the details in July this year at Comic Con. A new poster, a new trailer, and a release date. An amazing soundtrack that was released this Tuesday. And last night was the premiere of the long awaited film. I got to the theater so excited and I instantly saw some fellow Metallica fans and greeted them. The light's go dim and the IMAX logo springs onto the screen. Then the opening scene which features this hilarious fat metalhead blasting "Whiplash" out of his car and screaming "METALLICA!!! FUCK YEAH!!!". Then comes our main character Trip, a roadie for Metallica searching for a truck where inside holds an item the band needs the night of the concert. And all while Trip is searching for this bag, The Four Horseman of Metal are tearing it up on stage with their classics including Creeping Death, For Whom the Bell Tolls, And Justice For All, Nothing Else Matters, etc. The movie was so loud and in your face. The IMAX worked so well with this film because it felt like you where on stage with the band. You could even see the sweat from their arms and heads, that's how close it felt like being in the movie. The 3D was lacking I have to admit. But it was the performances of Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, and Enter Sandman that really stole the show because the stage completely morphed into the songs themselves because during those songs the classic Metallica crosses seen on the cover of Puppets came out of the stage and it looked like a graveyard on stage with Metallica performing in it. Ride the Lightning had the classic electric chair drop down to the middle of the stage where above the Tesla coils sat. During Kirk's solo and electricity hit the coils and it looked exactly like shown on the album cover. I want to be spoiler free, but the final scene during the end credits is so amazing. Just watching James, Robert, Lars, and Kirk jamming out on the classic instrumental Orion. No audience, No crew, just Metallica. I was so happy with this film. I was headbanging in my seat, singing every song they played. Seeing my heroes on the big screen was nothing short of spectacular.

My Rating (out of 5): 5/5.
