Review of Melancholia (2011) by Jared F — 10 Oct 2012
I really wanted to love it, but couldn't connect with the characters at all. I really struggled with the feeling there was a constant puppet master at work rather than genuine intents and desires driving the protagonists, and the less than captivating plot unravelling. Overall, nothing managed to ring true, whether in the Festen like first act or the ridiculously long and deeply uninteresting justifications of the second act.
Stellar acting and great visual work in the intro sequence, and as a metaphor one might say it succeeds in depicting depression, but it left me with the impression that a good, motivated story would have been much more interesting.
