Review of Melancholia (2011) by Tyler R — 18 Jul 2014

Melancholia written and directed by Lars Von Trier is a beautiful film about the end of the world. It stars Kirsten Dunst as Justine a woman who has just gotten married to Michael played by Alexander Skarsgard and we meet them as there going to their wedding party which is being thrown by Justine's sister and her husband and the party is turnigninto a disaster Justine keeps disappearing and then we learn that she is depressed and in one scene in particular she nearly catatonic.

While all of this stuff is happening a planet called Melancholia is barreling toward our planet. This is not a traditional disaster film because it deals more with what people in this sort of situation would react if they knew they would be dead at any moment.

Justine for example is ready for the world to end she doesn't really care while her sister is getting more and more depressed as the planet gets closer. The ending shot is kind of too on the nose with it's metaphor and sometimes it drags but overall this is a fantastic film with a metaphor that again is too on the nose but makes for a powerful film.
