Review of Melancholia (2011) by Mary I — 18 Aug 2014
A different apocalyptic movie, Melancholia is truly a work of art. The thing I enjoyed most about it, was undoubtedly the cinematography; the frames were absolutely breathtaking, every single thing in the movie was beautiful, yet surprisingly mirrored ugliness and depression at the same time. This effect wouldn't have been achieved if it hadn't been for the majestic music accompanying every scene. This haunting combination literally gave me the thrills. The acting was also amazing, it was one of Kirsten Dunst's best performances.
The director mostly explores human psyche than anything else in this movie and I think because it is not a conventional sci-fi, it will frustrate most viewers; many people may find it tedious. So I don't recommend it unless you are a fan of Von Trier or simply have an eccentric taste.
