Review of Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus (2009) by Evan C — 13 Feb 2010
Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus. Cool name, bad execution. Well, realistically speaking, what straight-to-DVD, low-budget, Asylum-produced film would have a good execution? Anyways, after reading about the high level of buzz for this film and seeing a trailer, I was convinced this might be one of those films that is so bad, its good. So, $4 in hand, to Movie Gallery I went. I got home, plopped the DVD in my PS3, and began the 90-minute odyssey through B-movie hell.
At first, the film has some promise; a decent setup and some goofy CGI of a huge shark and octopus. Entertaining enough. But soon, the film devolves into a dreadfully boring, horribly edited (almost constantly in certain parts of the film, this grayscale flicker pops up as an excuse for style that pissed me off royally) "how can we defeat it" type of film broken up by a brief attack sequence once every 20 or so minutes (and only one of these ends up being any good). Yet I still continued to watch the film, hoping the finale would be better...
But it wasn't. Instead of directly getting some goofy fight sequence between the shark and octopus, we pretty much get a dull, overly long buildup consisting of looping the same CGI sequences of the shark and octopus moving around, leading to the brief and disappointingly simple battle scene. The film, for the most part, was finally over. Relieved, I put the DVD back in its case to return to Movie Gallery, never to be seen again. Now I know why the case was covered with cobwebs when I picked it from the shelf.
