Review of Meek's Cutoff (2011) by Brett B — 26 Dec 2011
Slow-moving but compelling, this film feels authentic, even documentary-ish at points; it's crammed full of period detail, and the dusty, desolate location shooting heightens the sense of realism. The cast is populated by great actors, but this is pretty much Michelle Williams' movie, and she's very good in a reserved and understated role.
Reichardt's direction is surprisingly minimalist, which lends the film an austere sort of mood that might not sit well with all audiences, but I dug it.
