Efron acquits himself well as the young high school student who accidentally lands himself a part in Orson Welles' now seminal Julius Caesar stage production at the new Mercury Theatre in New York.

Charming, witty and with a keen sense of the period, this adaptation of Robert Kaplow's novel is refreshing, harking back to the backstage comedy/dramas of old.

Although a gifted mimic, McKay's performance is more than an impersonation, yet he never overpowers the piece, leaving Efron and the able supporting cast space to breathe and give the story life. If there's a criticism, it's that the dramatic points are hammered home a little too emphatically and the ending is entirely predictable. These things, however, don't detract from an otherwise wholly satisfying movie.
