Review of McCabe & Mrs. Miller (1971) by Ben W — 17 Jun 2009
Even though this one takes inordinately long to wind up, it resolves itself as probably robert altmans best film of his early career. beatty and christie play well together, it is excellently shot as are all altman films, and the art direction and set design looked wonderful even though there was so much to build.
its certainly one of altmans most poetic works and that is all because of the last 40 minutes. one scene changed my entire opinion of the film. mccabe reveals himself as a human being which was an unexpected turn in the sequence of events because nothing before it would have suggested he was capable of that level of introspection as a character.
It was wall machismo up until that point. but when the end comes and the negative aspects of all the characters are revealed there is still room for empathy. thats what makes a good film.
