Review of Mask (1985) by Ms Amanda J — 16 Jan 2011
Sad but also a very inspirational film. Rusty and Rocky Dennis (Cher, Eric Stoltz) handled the strange looks they got with such brilliance and wit. I hope the real Rocky Dennis got through life with such nonchalant optimism.
Kelly Jo Minter's part is also very crucial in this movie because she plays a prostitute who sees the beauty in Rocky, and vice versa because of Rocky's kindness to everyone. Deformation, and prostitution are both open to ridicule in this world, and here, we see these two characters getting along beautifully, without judging each other, perhaps because they understand each other in a way.
Mask is a well made drama with some heartbreaking moments but viewers can also look at it as a celebration of the life of Rocky Dennis.
