Review of Masculin Féminin (1966) by Joel M — 21 Aug 2007
A bit too scattered at times, and the cutting between sound and no sound is jarring every time it happens. With that out of the way, great acting, the dialogue is not only real but it's interesting.
I cannot even begin to explain how much I love the lingering camera. In between words/sentences/questions is where the most powerful things are said. And the way Godard directs our attention to various surroundings is the bees knees.
Could I feel anymore like I'm in the story? If something interesting is going on in your surroundings, you're gonna watch it. And for longer than just a glance. He really shows how much he understands the subtleties of human behavior, which is always refreshing to see.
The film's not perfect, but the good certainly outweigh the flaws.
