Review of Masculin Féminin (1966) by A R — 12 Jul 2010
Godard, often immitated, seldom matched, strikes once again.
This film is perhaps less accessible than his others, as his focus of subversion in this film is narrative. This leads to a very disjointed narrative indeed and one that certainly has a strong social commentary.
There is also a strong focus on sound both diegetic and non-diegetic, at times Godard speaks to the audience directly through voice over and written slides and there is much disjointed sound in the film.
There is the usual placing of what cinema and art "should be". The scene with the director talking to the actress about being over rehearsed is genius, as is the scene with the movie projectionist.
There is of course a strong existentialist theme throughout the piece and the zeitgeist of post war France is certainly given off.
A very good film, with some interesting insights into the world of cinema.
