Oh God, I LOVE this movie! Being a more free adaptation of the P.L. Travers books that it is based on, "Mary Poppins" is an imaginative trip into whimsy and fun that Disney seems to really know how to portray.
Aside from the undeniably fun and catchy songs, great animation, charming characters, and great sets, "Mary Poppins" also is just, simply put, a great story. I watched this movie a lot as a kid, and it still remains one of my favorite Disney pictures.
I can't say whether or not I like the musical because I haven't seen it, but for now, treat yourself to the spoonful of sugar that is Disney's "Mary Poppins.".
