Review of Mary and Max (2009) by Andrea M — 08 Oct 2011
Got to be the saddest and strangest animated film I have ever seen.
However, it has a certain charm and message I feel is missing in most movies today.
The fact that it is a real story impressed me, and the style of animation, although not new, made the movie feel fresh.
I felt the way the story was told was brilliant and moving.
It is by no means a children's story because of its adult themes and dark tone.
This film, while it's about two miserable people, gives you a genuine reason to love them, and hope for the best throughout the movie. It gives you a reason to hang on and watch. It also gives you a reason to believe in God. The result is a truly bittersweet ending.
To sum it up, dark, surreal, uncomfortable, but ultimately rewarding. Gets four from me.
