Review of Marty (1955) by Andrew S — 04 Oct 2007
Usually cast as a thuggish villain it was interesting to see Ernest Borgnine in one of the few sympathetic roles he ever played. Marty is a touching and sweet film â?? your grandmother probably loves it - but lacks the gravitas and depth of a number of better films that came out that year (The Night of the Hunter, Rififi, Rebel Without a Cause, To Catch a Thief -- to name a few).
As such it feels a bit overrated to be a Best Picture winner as itâ??s nothing more than a sappy melodrama.
