Review of Marty (1955) by Matthew C — 11 Feb 2014
This film is more than worth the watch! Borgnine and Blair are winning, charming and unforgettable. I guarantee there are millions of people who found and will find this movie relatable. And I'm talking PRIMAL relatable.
Delbert Mann delivers a real drama with Italian comedy that could teach modern romances a thing or two. While I do have problems with the ending, the point of the film is not lost. The struggles of finding that lasting relationship, the fears of stepping into that world once its at your door, and the emotional ups and downs, no matter the timeline, are all laid bare through the characters.
And it's not just for the single. Engaged, married, divorced, widowed, whatever your situation, you will walk with these men and women. You will join their conversations on the sidewalk and in the living room.
You WILL be there and you will feel like you know them. Get to know people. Listen to them. Take chances. Give of yourself. "Marty" screams so much at the audience that an Oscar isn't enough.
The value of this movie is the timelessness of real love and the wisdom in searching for what is good, seizing it, and never letting go despite the countless distractions, bruises, and tears. Watch this movie and forget it's 1955 or 2014.
Some things never change... and shouldn't.
