Review of Marty (1955) by Kenneth L — 08 Jan 2010
A special, nice little movie. It's a simple story about an unattractive man who finds romance with an unattractive woman. Ernest Borgnine is really very good as Marty, who means well but is shy and awkward.
Betsy Blair is also excellent as the woman he meets, and her role is more interesting than was usual for women's roles in the 1950s. It's short, simple, and sentimental, but it works. The direction is straightforward.
It's a very good and unusual romantic comedy.
