Review of Martin (1978) by Chuck N — 05 Jul 2011
Add this to the "I can't believe I've never seen it" list. After seeing horrid Romero films [Bruiser, Season Of The Witch] I kind of assumed he was a one trick pony [zombies]. This one floored me with it's realism, sympathetic characters, and relentless creepiness.
This is well acted low budget independent film making at it's finest. Like the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a big budget would have actually harmed the film. Was there ever a vampire film like this, before Martin? It's definitely the precursor to Let The Right One In, and I even saw Showtime's Dexter all over this.
My only qualm, was the bright red blood, which looks unrealistic - but those were the times. I'd almost forgive Romero if he took some CGI and darkened that blood, because it would almost look contemporary.
