Don't believe the hype. Or maybe I'm just stupid. I don't know. The first time I tried to watch this movie, I was mercifully rescued by a 90-minute phone call with a friend. The second time, I got through 20 minutes before giving up and taking a 4-hour nap. Finally, once I watched it, I was like, "Yeah, the 'Is it safe' thing is famous, but what else do you have to offer me?" Boring, filled with plot holes, and with a ridiculous, unsatisfying ending unapproved by the work's original writer.
And Roy Scheider as Hoffman's brother? That just isn't kosher.
