Review of Marathon Man (1976) by Zane T — 11 Feb 2010
I don't think Dustin Hoffman, who was pushing 40 when this movie was made is very convinching as a college student. Roy Scheider seems to work with some dialect that not even he is sure what it is.
The only good performance is by Olivier who tortures Hoffman's character with dental appliances. It's creepy but it sends a chill down. Olivier apparently criticized Hoffman's method techniques of getting into character by running to appear out of breath.
This thriller doesn't provide many thrills. You know exactly who is going to double cross who and the twists aren't twists. Still, it's worth seeing for Olivier's performance as a twisted Nazi.
