Review of Marathon Man (1976) by Aidan H — 25 Mar 2012
Despite the intervening years, MM still chills the bones (and gums) mostly due to superb performances from Hoffman and Schneider as the Levy brothers up to their necks in diamonds, intrigue and old nazis.
But the cold heart of the film is entirely due to Olivier's unnerving performance as the White Angel and a clever script by William Goldman (adapted from his own book). Director Schlesinger amps up the tension with some memorable set-pieces, most notably during the (literally) nerve-shredding oral torture sequence.
A classic that justifiably earns its status as one of the best thrillers ever made.
