Review of Mao’s Last Dancer (2009) by Larry Q — 11 Sep 2010
One of the year's best films. Generally now showing in mainstream theaters, but well worth searching out.
A wonderful story, based on fact, of a young Chinese student selected during the Chinese cultural revolution for training in ballet.
Having overcome major hardships during his training in Bejing, he travels to Houston for additional training, falls in love with both a young woman and America. Although international law allows him to stay in this country once he has married, the Chinese do their best to force him to return to China - unsuccessfully.
The ballet scenes are probably the best ever filmed - truly a delight to watch, even for the uninitiated.
Without giving away the ending, suffice it to say that a couple of the final scenes will bring tears to your eyes.
This is a wonderful example of filmmaking at it's best!
