Review of Mao’s Last Dancer (2009) by Brian D — 22 Sep 2010
This movie is offensively bad; it's a stereotyped and banal telling of a truly compelling story. I can't think of another movie I was so excited about that was so thoroughly disappointing. My girlfriend (who is in the industry) and I walked out after 45 minutes, which was 40 minutes more than we should have given it. I rated it a 20 instead of a zero because the set and costume design are quite good (I suppose the ballet was good too, but if I wanted to watch ballet, I wouldn't have been at a movie theater).
Usually I understand why a lot of people like a movie I hate. I have no idea what people saw in this.
