Review of Maniac Cop (1988) by Jon P — 27 Jul 2015
Friday the 13th dons a badge and truncheon in William Lustig and Larry Cohen's cult crime slasher. Except this time, Jason comes in the form of B-movie legend, Robert Z'Dar.
Capricious characters and dull death scenes occupy a world of wobbly women and watered-down horror tropes, yet there's bags of fun to be had in revelling at the ingenious way Maniac Cop manages to be over-dramatic, yet completely devoid of drama at the same time.
Nobody takes cover, everybody leaps to conclusions and the whodunnit elements of the film fall flat on their face, because nobody else in the universe looks even a little like Robert Z'Dar. Especially not Bruce Campbell.
Trashy, slashy silliness with a slo-mo shower scene to die for.
