Review of Manderlay (2005) by Paul J — 27 Feb 2010
To my surprise, Lars Von Trier's second installment in his USA trilogy, is as brilliant and profound as the first. Manderlay draws us into a dramatically gripping story that is even more complex and thought-provoking than Dogville.
It does however lack the freshness of the original, as well as some of the exceptional performances. Also, the opening is a bit awkward and contrived. But fear not, stick with the film and you will be greatly rewarded.
The risks - politically, racially and sexually - that Von Trier takes, left me speechless. Where does he come up with this stuff? A true genius. Both Dogville and Manderlay are masterpieces - plain and simple.
